Pip Cross Strategy Guide: Advanced Deduction Techniques
Once the fundamentals from our Pip Cross rules guide and the quick wins in our tips and tricks article feel automatic, it's time for real strategy. This guide covers the techniques that separate a two-minute solve from a twenty-second one on Hard and Super boards.
Think in constraints, not guesses
The biggest mental shift when moving from Easy to Super difficulty is treating every row and column not as an addition problem, but as a constraint that removes possibilities from the whole board. Every die you confirm or rule out in one line should immediately be checked against every other line it belongs to. This is called constraint propagation, and it's the same principle expert Sudoku and Kakuro solvers use.
Use parity to cut your options in half
Dice values are 1 through 6, so three are odd (1, 3, 5) and three are even (2, 4, 6). Before testing combinations, check whether a target is odd or even:
- An odd target requires an odd number of odd dice in the selection (1 or 3 odd dice, for example).
- An even target requires an even number of odd dice (0 or 2 odd dice).
This single check eliminates roughly half of the "obviously wrong" combinations before you even start adding numbers, and it scales beautifully on larger Super boards where a line might have five or six dice.
Solve high-density corners first
On Hard and Super difficulty, dice density is higher, which means corners and edges where two short lines intersect tend to resolve fastest — there are simply fewer dice contributing to each target. Clear the corners before tackling long central rows, since a solved corner locks in values that ripple inward.
Track "must include" and "must exclude" separately
As you deduce, keep two mental (or literal, on paper) lists per line: dice that must be selected, and dice that must be excluded. A line is only fully solved when the sum of the "must include" dice equals the target and every remaining die is confirmed excluded. Treating these as two separate lists, rather than one running total, prevents the most common late-game mistake: forgetting to exclude a die that is no longer needed once other dice are confirmed.
When you're stuck: pick the shortest undetermined line
If propagation stalls, don't guess randomly. Find the row or column with the fewest still-undetermined dice and enumerate its remaining possibilities by hand — with only two or three unknowns left, there are rarely more than a handful of valid combinations, and testing them against the intersecting column targets will usually break the deadlock in one or two tries.
Practice against the clock
